Play Synopsis:

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an exuberant young governess in Austria in 1938 as she brings music and joy back to a broken family, only to face danger and intrigue as the Nazis gain power.

Roles Available:

We are not auditioning the role of Mother Abbess.  All other roles are available.  Download the character descriptions here. There are named roles for 7 women, 4 men, 5 girls and 2 boys and more than a dozen ensemble parts.

HOW TO SIGN UP:​

1. Complete the Audition Information Form at the bottom of this page (or on Airtable here). 

   • Note ANY and ALL dates/times you have conflicts on your online audition form below. You can compare to our rough calendar here.

   • Upload a headshot/digital photo as part of the form. 

2. ACTOR/CREW AGREEMENT. This has important details with the typical rehearsal schedule and expectations. Download, print, sign. Upload completed agreements into form below or bring to your audition.

3. Attend the audition on Saturday, April 5.  Auditions will have two parts:

   • Everyone must attend the dance audition from 10:45am-12:30pm on Saturday, April 5 at the Morgan Performing Arts Center, Morgan Middle School - except women only auditioning for the Nun's Ensemble

   • Additionally, you MUST sign up for a timeslot for your music and acting audition (between 9:30 - 10:30 AM or between 1:00 - 4:45 PM).

If you cannot attend auditions on April 5th or 6th, please email info@valleytheatreco.org to discuss alternatives.  That said, we would like to see and hear as many people on April 5 as we can.

*Also note that cast/crew in VTC's Frozen Jr. and CWU's Once Upon a Mattress productions are eligible to audition, and some rehearsal scheduling accommodations can be made to cover the overlap in productions through May 18th as needed.*

What to Prepare

MUSIC

• 60 seconds of a Broadway style song of your choice

• Songs from The Sound of Music are permitted, Songs from the Golden Age of Broadway are encouraged.

• A speaker will be provided for your phone or other Bluetooth device. You can use a backing track/Karaoke/Instrumental music to accompany your song.  Please send your music link to us ahead of time or include on the form below.

• NOTE: AN ACCOMPANIST WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE ON APRIL 5.

Portions of the script (“audition sides”) will be provided for you to read some dialogue.  There is no need to prepare a monologue or a dance routine. Preview the Audition Sides here.

Callbacks will be on Sunday, April 6 in the afternoon. You will be contacted if we need you for a callback audition.  Parts may be cast without needing callback auditions so please don’t worry if you aren’t called back.
